Tunnel bear good for torrenting?

So I have been contacted by my internet provider a few times within the last month about the things I download. Short story they said they will turn my internet off if caught again I have no idea if they were being serious or not but to be safe, I wanted to use a VPN. Tunnel bear seems simple and easy enough as well as cheap to where its the most attractive to me. Can anyone tell me how this works if it really does block my internet provider from seeing what I download? So if this is some super basic question new to this!

The internet used to be a place for everyone to find and access information without any restrictions or prejudice. Although in most cases we are still able to do this no matter where we are located or what our gender or age are, certain websites still appear to be ‘blocked’ for some of us.

This is especially true when it comes to torrent sites, and The Pirate Bay is a very good example. If you live in Europe, you’ve most probably had trouble in accessing such websites before. It probably won’t make you feel any better, but there are countries in the world that can’t even use social media – Iran, China and North Korea are just a few of them.

Moving back to our initial problem, many people have asked us how to gain access to such blocked websites. Even though it may seem like a complicated thing to do, it’s actually pretty easy, and the simple answer to this question is VPN – Virtual Private Network.

What is VPN?

In case you haven’t heard of the term VPN before, you should know that it helps users create a private network. The latter enables your computer to both send and receive information to and from various networks as if you were connected to some sort of private network.

To make it even easier to understand, no one will actually be able to identify who you are or where you’re located. For this reason, you will be creating a tunnel between your own computer and all other public and shared networks existing in the world. Given this aspect, no content will be blocked anymore.

Now that you know what VPN is all about, let’s move on to how you can actually make this happen. In most cases, you would use a proper VPN service that costs money and requires you to go through a few steps. However, there are a few other ways to do it.

Tools to Access Blocked Websites:

We are living in a time where getting a VPN is no more a costly job, in fact for most of the usage, you can get one for free. Also, there is no need to setup a complicated software or even fiddle with your router. Most of the services now offer extensions, one-click VPN enabler, and even browsers now come with inbuilt VPN options, and Windows PCs have the option to configure them right in the core.

Now just before we start, I want to put in few words, especially when it comes to Privacy. Most of the Free tools used to access blocked sites aren’t very good at that. However, they do a good job when it comes to bypassing local blocks which are either implemented on Local Network or your ISP.

So, if you are using a FREE VPN solution, I would suggest you skip accessing your private data through them. That said, below is the list of tools that you can use without paying anything.

Browsec

This is my favorite in the list because it’s very easy to setup, doesn’t need any mandatory signup, and has an easy toggle on and off. The only drawback is that it is browser-based.

Available as a browser extension, just install it, and choose the location you wish for. Next, visit any blocked website from anywhere by typing the URL. It is as easy as that. There are five free locations, Netherlands, Singapore, UK and US, which will help you access possibly 99.9% of the websites around the world.

The extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, Opera. When it comes to smartphones, as of now, it is available for iOS, while the Android version is still in the works.

It also comes with paid version which you won’t need most of the time unless you are a heavy user looking for an edge. The premium version offers better speed, premium servers, and more locations. All at a price of $4.99 – $3.33 a month.

Opera’s inbuilt VPN

Nothing beats if VPN is built into the browser. Rolled out a few months back, Opera lets users use VPN for free, and without any restrictions hosted right on the Opera servers. While the service doesn’t offer any premium features, it is definitely the easiest.

You can choose between the available locations which include US, Canada, Singapore, Netherlands, and Germany. You get to see the amount of data transferred for each day, and IP address.

Activating VPN on Opera is straightforward. Go to the browser settings >Privacy & security> Enable VPN. Right after this, you’ll see a button in the browser address field where you can adjust VPN preferences, turn the feature off and on, as well as see stats on data used. It is also possible to use VPN when in private mode.

That said, here is a fact about Opera’s VPN. It is more of a proxy as they keep bandwidth and usage logs, even if it’s temporary. A true VPN will never have any logs or footprints stored anywhere.

Paid VPN Solutions:

If you ask any hard-core VPN user, he will end up suggesting you a paid VPN solution over a free. I have already explained why so now let’s take a look at some of the mots popular ones.

TunnelBear

This is one of the most popular VPNs and is truly a VPN which makes sure your privacy is honored. Here are the list of features:

  • Privacy from ISPs, hackers, and anyone who monitors the network.
  • Works flawlessly even if you are browsing from Public WiFi as the traffic is completely encrypted (AES 256)
  • There is absolutely no logging.

  • Supports 20+ countries.
  • It is fast, and comes with one click turn on option.
  • Multiple Device support i.e. upto 5 devices.
  • Dedicated Support Team.
  • Always on.

It offers software based solution for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. if you wish for extensions, they have it for Chrome and Opera.

When it comes to privacy, it starts with a free plan which is limited to 500 MB bandwidth, followed by $7.99 / month, and $3.33/month if you pay upfront for a year. All paid plans are unlimited. Check it out.

Problems With Tunnelbear

Concluding, these tools are more than enough to get you access to most of the blocked sites. Privacy is one factor you need to think over to choose between a paid tool and a free tool, specially when accessing torrent sites if they are blocked in the region.
